Top 100 Hospitals for Cardiovascular Care in 2005

Baptist Hospital was named one of the nation?s 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals as part of a study featured in this week's issue of Modern Healthcare magazine.

One of only 30 community hospitals included on the list, Baptist performed better than its peers in four areas examined by the study: mortality rates for heart attacks, congestive heart failure and coronary artery bypass grafts and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

More than 860 U.S. hospitals were evaluated in the study, which was conducted by Thomson, an Illinois-based company specializing in comparative measurements of cost, quality and market performance for the healthcare industry. The study used data from two primary sources: Medicare cost reports and the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, which contains information on the approximately 12 million Medicare patients who are discharged from the nation?s acute care hospitals each year.

Thomson found that more than 10,000 additional heart patients would survive each year if the other 762 hospitals included in the study provided the same quality of care as the 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. Another 1,110 patients also could avoid such complications as infections and hemorrhaging, according to the report.

The study looked at three classes of hospitals: teaching hospitals with cardiovascular residency programs, teaching hospitals without cardiovascular residency programs and community hospitals such as Baptist Hospital.

Winner of the 2003 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, Baptist Hospital Inc., which also includes Gulf Breeze Hospital and Baptist Medical Park, has long focused on quality of care, continuously measuring key indicators, identifying opportunities for improvement and finding ways to ensure excellence.
