Our monthly bariatric support group allows you to meet with, and learn from, people who already have had the surgery. There are also monthly Meet The Doctor meetings providing comprehensive information about morbid obesity, its treatment options, including gastric bypass and lap-band surgery. Weight loss surgery is major surgery.
The Baptist Hospital Bariatric Center provides you with services and support to help you succeed in your post-operative life. Prior to your surgery, you will meet with a psychologist specializing in weight-related issues to ensure that bariatric surgery is right for you. You also will undergo a nutritional evaluation with a registered dietician specializing in the nutritional needs of bariatric patients. To prepare you for your surgery, you must attend one of the centers weekly pre-operative education classes, which are conducted by our dietician and bariatric nurse liaison. You will learn specifics about the surgery, the recovery process and the nutritional requirements that follow a gastric bypass procedure.

The bariatric nurse liaison who underwent the surgery herself follows each patient through the entire process, from pre-operative counseling to post-operative support, counseling and follow-up. As your personal nurse, this liaison plays an essential role in ensuring your successful recovery and adjustment.
A bariatric nurse practitioner a registered nurse with advanced training and certification works with your surgeon to provide you with comprehensive follow-up care, monitoring your physical condition and psychological adjustment during the first five years following your surgery.
