Prepared Childbirth Frequently Asked Questions

I will be having a baby at Baptist Hospital. What should I do to get started?
Call the Mother Baby Care Center and enroll in our free Early Pregnancy/Hospital Orientation Class. At the class we will help you complete your hospital registration, go over ways to insure your health and the health of your baby, show the film which explains epidural anesthesia, and tour Labor and Delivery and the Post Partum Unit.

How soon should I start prepared childbirth classes?
Our Early Pregnancy/Hospital Orientation Class is designed to get you off to the best start possible. You should attend this class as early in your pregnancy as possible. Prepared Childbirth Class is a six week series that you should begin no later than your 30th week of pregnancy. Class sizes are limited so it is best to enroll early to ensure your first choice for class day and time.

Why should I take prepared childbirth classes?
We know that when women and the people that support them have knowledge about the process of birth they have more positive birth experiences. We can teach a woman and her partner what to expect, and spend a great deal of time learning coping skills to ease pain and anxiety. Partners learn what to expect and what they can do to make things better.

Is there a charge for classes?
The Early Pregnancy/Hospital Orientation Class is free. There is a charge for all other classes. If the class fees for Prepared Childbirth, Infant Care, and Breastfeeding present a financial hardship, scholarships are available through your health care provider.

I would like the birth of my baby to be as natural as possible. How can I learn about options offered by Baptist Hospital?
Baptist Hospital has a birth preference list which explains many of the options we offer. You will want to discuss the birth preference list with your health care provider to decide which options will be best for you and your baby. The Birth Preference List will also be discussed in length in your Prepared Childbirth Class. Our goal is to help you have the birth you are hoping for in the safety of a hospital environment.

I am planning to have an epidural. Should I still take prepared childbirth classes?
Yes. Even if you are planning to have an epidural you will probably have some time before epidural anesthesia is an option. We will teach you and your partner a number of comfort measures to be used before and even after an epidural.
