Anesthesia
is required during open heart surgery to create a total loss of sensation. A
patient receiving open heart surgery is unconscious throughout the
procedure. During a preoperative visit, patients are seen by
an anesthesiologist who explains the anesthesia process. Just
prior to surgery, the patient is taken to a special pre-surgery area
where sedation begins. The process includes placement of intravenous
lines for administration of drugs and for monitoring various systems
during the surgery. An anesthesiologist, along with a technician,
will remain with the patient throughout the entire procedure managing
all the vital functions.
