The role of Baptist Hospital's laboratory in the care of heart patients is to provide a full range of diagnostic and monitoring tests as requested by the clinicians.  The lab personnel are an essential part of the open heart team.  They assist with the patient preparation procedures and are available throughout the entire testing process.  They are available to carry samples to the nearby surgical support lab (stat lab) so the work can be completed quickly and the results can be hand delivered back to the operating team.  The main lab is located on the ground floor.  It is equipped to provide in-depth testing as needed by the HeartFirst team.

Baptist Hospital operates a full service blood bank.  It is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), a nonprofit agency dedicated to promoting the highest standards of quality in patient care and blood administration.  For heart surgeries, the blood bank will routinely cross match and prepare two units of packed red blood cells for each case.  The patient is matched for blood type prior to surgery by a medical technologist who holds a bachelor's degree in the field.  This process takes approximately one hour initially and then blood components can be provided within 15 minutes of notification thereafter.  Although most cases do not need blood components, we are prepared for any circumstance either during or immediately after the procedure.

The blood bank provides other supportive components such as fresh frozen plasma to replace clotting factors and platelets.  The blood bank can assist patients in arranging for directed donor units from a specific family member or friend.  By contacting the Northwest Florida Blood Center, these units will be ready for the patient's surgery.  The staff maintains constant assessment of the blood inventory to make sure that the supply is plentiful should a patient need to return to surgery.  The blood bank is staffed 24 hours a day with additional on-call support available on weekends for coverage of any unexpected circumstance.  The Northwest Florida Blood Center is our community supplier and is also accredited by the AABB as well as by the State of Florida and the FDA.
