Respiratory therapy provides a crucial link in the chain of care for open heart patients.  A member of the team is notified prior to the surgery if possible.  The therapist can explain to the patient the process and the use of the incentive spirometer.  The technician will work closely with the attending nurse to avoid waking a patient unnecessarily.

After the surgery is complete a team member is waiting in the coronary care unit where the patient will recover from the surgery.  All of the equipment necessary to support the respiratory function of the patient is available along with any additional equipment that might be needed should an emergency arise.  The respiratory therapist will work closely with the physician and the attending nurse to assist the patient in breathing on his own.  The therapist watches the patient closely with ongoing assessment of vital statistics to make the process as smooth and efficient as possible.  The patients are monitored by therapists until all respiratory treatments and/or the use of oxygen is discontinued.

Respiratory therapists who provide care of open heart or other cardiovascular disease patients must demonstrate proficiency in support skills above the standard educational and certification requirements.  A mentorship plan is in place to ensure that new therapists are fully prepared to take on the task of caring for CCU patients.  The respiratory therapy is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
