It is now possible to provide sustained relief to patients with chronic angina pectoris using a non-invasive treatment called Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) therapy. EECP therapy is often used to treat patients who are not candidates for invasive procedures because they are unsuitable or unwilling.
Clinical Benefits EECP therapy produces beneficial effects on perfusion of the ischemic myocardium in patients with coronary artery disease. |
The following benefits have been observed:
- Relief of anginal symptoms
- Resolution of reversible ischemic defects found upon radionuclide assessment
- Improved exercise treadmill times
- Rectification of exercise ECG ST segment abnormalities
- Reduction or cessation of the need for anti-anginal medications
- Ability to enjoy a more independently mobile and active lifestyle

Research Studies Clinical studies have shown that EECP therapy can relieve or eliminate angina and improve radionuclide scan perfusion defects. Researchers at the Health Sciences Center at the State University of New York at Stony Brook began clinical studies of EECP therapy in 1989. More than 600 patients have been studied, and results have been presented at national cardiology meetings. These studies demonstrated statistically significant improvements in physical activity and quality of life.
Alternative to Bypass Surgery or Angioplasty Invasive procedures such as balloon angioplasty and coronary artery bypass grafting may bring relief and a normal life for patients with angina pectoris. However, these procedures fail frequently, are not without risk of harmful after-effects, and are expensive.
EECP therapy is a non-invasive, distress-free option that can be a viable alternative to bypass surgery or angioplasty. Unlike invasive procedures, EECP therapy can be administered in outpatient sessions, carries little or no risk, and is relatively comfortable.
Patient Enrollment If you would like more information about EECP therapy or would like to refer patients, please call our EECP therapy center.
